More than 1 million tons of textiles are thrown away on a landfill site every year. The fast fashion industry is considered the second dirtiest industry in the world after the petroleum business. So many fashion giants pretend to find sustainable or eco alternatives but it`s all greenwashing. Does this bother me as a human, as a blogger, as a fashion enthusiast? Definitely. Solutions for a real eco-fashion sector? We can start with decreasing fashion consumption, limit the cotton production, reduce the carbon footprint, avoid toxic chemicals, fur, leather used in production and improve working conditions. An immediate resolution? Wear your clothes more often, layer them for autumn/winter for example.

If the eco-fashion belief doesn`t  resonate with your personal lifestyle or daily habits what about saving some money? Make the most of your clothes and reuse them. One of the reasons you have a nothing to wear wardrobe is fear. You are not brave enough to play with colours and textures. Or simply you are afraid your outfit is not good enough and you will look like a walking blanket. And then you are brainwashed thinking “you need new clothes”. What about preserving your money for travels or any other goals instead of spending them on the latest trends? Why? Because autumn/winter are the perfect seasons for the layering game.  How? Wear your current items in chic and unexpected ways that match your style.

In my last post Transition your wardrobe into autumn without breaking the bank, I mentioned the layering process as an initial step. Take some inspiration from the following outfit ideas. I chose to exemplify with as many garments as I could and give you some useful tips as well. You will see how easy it is to bring your clothes together and recreate outfits that are sustainable and cost-free. This is based on the premise you already have autumn/ winter items from past seasons.

 1.1. Knitwear over a shirt

1.2 Knitwear over a dress

1.3 Knitwear over a blouse

1.4 Knitwear over another knitwear piece

Adding a sweater on top of a dress transforms the garment instantly into a skirt. It is a great idea to transition your summer dresses into autumn/winter, hide the straps and stay warm at the same time. When mixing a chunky knit with another knit, pay attention to the weight of the materials. Chose a stripy thin sweater and add the big item on top. Then roll the sleeves to reveal the details underneath. You can do the same with a lacey or see-through blouse.

2.1 Shirt over trousers/jeans

2.2 Shirt under a dress

2.3 Shirt over a roller neck

2.4 Shirt over another shirt

If you are working in on office or you simply want to wear your shirts more, don`t hesitate. Just do the layering game.  A long shirt that covers the butt is a good choice. When paring 2 shirts together, again chose thin materials and contrasting fabrics.

3.1 Dress over a blouse

3.2 Dress over another dress

3.3 Dress over jeans

The images I chose may seem appropriate for a chill autumn, but don`t forget to layer your outerwear pieces and add thick tights, socks, over the knee boots to keep you warm. Mixing a long jumper dress with another dress (lace, stripes, floral texture) is a brilliant idea.  If going all denim is not your thing, you can still wear a different material dress in the cold season. Choose an oversize/ loose fit dress and pair it with black trousers, jeans or leather pants.

4.1 Top over a blouse

4.2 T-shirt over a shirt

4.3 T-shirt as the first layer

I know is not rocket science and I am sure you thought about wearing t-shirts, bodysuits or cami tops in the frosty months.Remember the ’90 layering idea of adding t-shirts over blouses and shirts? Well, why not?

5.1 Blazer under a coat

5.2 Jacket under a  coat

5.3 Gillet under a coat

5.4 Gillet over jacket

5.5 Jacket over gillet / another jacket

If you are living in a colder climate, I am sure this is the layering idea you waited for the most. Does jacket over jacket seems too much? No, but it`s more about the materials you chose to wear. Pair a heat puffer jacket with a fluffy shearling jacket.  Chose well-fitted items and different lengths. For example, the puffer jacket can be a short one and the shearling jacket over your butt.

6.1 Tights, socks, boots

6.2 Over-the-knee boots under cullotes

6.3 Over-the-knee boots under midi-skirts / long dresses

6.4 Over-the-knee boots over jeans

In order to keep you from freezing, you need to cover your head, ears, hands, butt and feets. Don`t worry, I am not going to suggest to wear boots over boots as a magic solution. But you can wear a beanie and a hood over. Layer tights ( one or two pairs) with socks and over the knee boots. Over the knee boots will preserve the heat, adding that extra cover you need. Wear them over jeans or under maxi-dresses, skirts, culottes.

How do you feel about the idea of reusing your existing clothes for autumn/winter and not buying new ones?

These are some stylish ideas for winter fashion. Dress over a blouse is a nice idea. Accessories also look cool.

I never like to follow trends, it’s expensive and often trends come and go quickly and don’t suit my style anyway. I like reusing my clothes (as long as they are in good condition) and creating new looks and outfits from them 🙂

I do love the mixing and matching of the clothing. And if it helps reduce the eco footprint, it’s always good. My daughter loves upcycling her clothing. And I appreciate she likes to try and do that.

I like how you raise awareness of the environmental damage clothes cause. Your layering trips are great, I will definitely try out some of those, especially 4.1, 3.2 and 6.4

As a guy, I’ve always loved the dress over a shirt and dress over jeans looks. Really cool style that obviously I can’t pull off myself, but yeah.

Oh I love the knitware over the silk dress. Gorgeous contrast of textures, would love to be able to pull that look off. I really like it over the denim shirt and leather leggings too. But that might be a bit too much for me.

I was a huge fan of layering from wayyy back when I was a teen. Okay not that long ago but I distinctly remember all those Goosebumps books characters layering up like crazy. So did the Harry Potter movie franchise characters. This is a huge stylish step up from those I think.
I am all for sustainable clothing, of course! Oh and thanks! Learned a new word today! Greenwashing.
